For Granted
It's amazing, really,
The things that we don't notice,
That we miss, that we've grown numb to,
That we take for granted,
Every single day of our lives
I'm feeling philosophical, so bare with me
Like love, for instance
Why do so many only get emotional about it
After it's gone, and they are alone?
If you had paid attention while you had it
Maybe, no guarantees, but maybe
You'd still have it
Like computers, and other technical things
Everybody wants them, many have them
And yet when they are taken away,
Whatever the reason,
All we do is complain about what WE don't have
What about those who have never had ANY of it?
Like sodas, Gatorade, and juice
Any type of food or drink really
We waste more every meal
Than many get in a week
We buy more than we can ever use,
And yet when asked to give, we REFUSE
Like a house, a real house, not a rental
Do you have any idea how many in this world
Have NEVER had a home of their own,
And most likely never will?
I cried when I finally got my home,
After 32 years of waiting and hoping, I cried
Like school, education
So many of us complain about it, hate it
And yet we forget that as many as 2 BILLION people
Have never had any formal education at all
And we call them "stupid", "hick", "backwards"
And yet we wonder why THEY hate US
Like medicine, clinics, hospitals
If we get a cold, it's off to the doctor!
And yet that same 2 BILLION will NEVER, EVER
Get even a Halls cough drop to ease their suffering
And yet we wonder at the child-like joy we see
On all their faces, as we watch TV
Like life, yes, you knew this one was coming
How many of us truly think about how close we could be to death?
Those 2 BILLION people, don't think about it, they live with it
Every single day of their lives, however few those may be
That's why they have the joy they do with what they have
They know just how close they are to losing it all
We take entirely too much for granted in life,
Because to take even ONE thing for granted,
Is one thing too many
In these uncertain times, many stand to lose everything
And those 2 BILLION still have nothing but each other
But that's enough for them, and they are happier than we are

snakes crawl out of my mouth,
hands like sleep waiting silently
for me to give into them.
i toss words like rocks
across my tongue, skipping
across the lake, and we reach,
hands outstretched, for the sun
but it's a shame it's all empty.

if you loved me, you'd paint
butterflies across the wall
to make me smile. listen,
if you loved me, you'd give
me handrails to hold onto
on the way down. you'd tell me
that right now, i'm a caterpillar
(but that caterpillars become
butterflies.) listen,
if you loved me,
you'd love me broken, too.

i know they dont want me to jump
I have forever harbored inside me a fascination with edges.
My first memories are of standing on a cliff, wanting oh so badly for it to crumble under my feet. I saw a line separating earth and sky, and an urge rose in my chest to blur it.
This feeling of always being on the very tip of reality, wishing I could lose my balance and plummet, only intensified as I grew older. I found such sweetness in thoughts of stepping over sidewalk cracks to plunge into a world with nowhere left to stand on.
At the same time I was afraid normal boys didnt think of falling as I did, didnt wan

So much is had by so many, and yet it is not shared. We spare hardly a thought for those less fortunate than ourselves, we simply complain when something is taken AWAY from US.
That is not how I was raised, and I'd like to think I would feel as I feel even if it wasn't. Sadly, I know personally many who were raised the same as me who only care for themselves, and what THEY have.
AND THAT'S WHY WE ARE IN TROUBLE.
Learn to appreciate LIFE, to NOT take it, and the things in it for granted.

Couldn't have said this message any better.
I was-and still is-raised spoiled. But I don't take advantage of it.
I continuously wonder why that number isn't smaller. One day-which should be VERY soon now that I'm almost 16-when i get a job I plan on splitting whatever my salary is in 7 ways. 1 way is to philanthropy. Most likely to a program for World Hunger & Poverty or a program to support shelter for families in Afghan. (I am SO inspired by Khaled Hosseini's books!)
Speaking of inspiration, this work inspired me to write something of my own on the this same subject. I'll get started on it!
